Research about the company is one of the things that interviewers could touch on during the interview. This does not mean that the candidate must know the total profit of the company last year but at least having a vague idea of the company would be a big help.
These are some interview questions which would help you see if the candidate has done some even a small background research of the company:
-How did you learn about the company?
-What is your brief idea/impression of the company?
-Can you tell me the nature of the firm?

Anyway, these are just some general questions to guide you and also to gauge if the candidate is prepared for the interview. These things are important because it shows that the applicant is genuinely interested in the company and also initiative in his part to be prepared during the screening process.
