Chimby, brainchild of Job Hunt Safari Guide CM Russell, hopes to aggregate and pass along the collected wisdom of the internet's recruiting and job-hunting advice in a cool, chunky, easy-to-consume format.
This follows a new trend in the Internet search space of narrowing search engines down not only to vertical search (where your results are focused on one "vertical" industry or topic, similar to how indeed provides job-only searching) but also to filtering search results through a layer of "experts", which uses "wisdom of crowds" ideology to float relevant, valuable results closer to users than auto-generated content sites (Squidoo moves toward this same objective with it's content-focusing lenses, such as a starter checklist for would-be bloggers, or my wife's favorite "Short Hairstyles for Women")
On Chimby, you can search or browse the categories, drilling down to find advice from experts such as:
- Jason Alba on Personal Branding
- Louise Fletcher & Co. on Resume Writing
- Meg Montford on Career Changes
- Peter Vogt on Job Interview Tips
I like the "cool" design, and how easy-to-read everything is. The format makes such boring data read very nicely. I like that RSS feeds are available abundantly from the homepage (making it easy to subscribe to topics you want to track).
To improve Chimby, I would:
- Have more interaction between viewer and result, such as a rating scale per-post that would bump up results as more people recommend it or push it lower if people trash it. Allow people to comment on posts, or show link-backs or sphere results surrounding posts.
- Also, though some sites in the index have good content (if you can find it), they are exceptionally ad-heavy, removing the clarity from the result that Chimby provides.
- Finally, the search results could be improved as they appear to be easily "gamed". Searching for Job Search, for example, returns many irrelevant results because many sites simply have the phrase "Job Search" in the title, but the post being returned is not highly relevant.
