Blogging Landed Her A Job

A young upstart just got what may be her next big break -- not necessarilly because of her references, her excellent resume, or any of that.

She got the job because of her blog.

Let me say that again: She got the job because of her blog.

That's right.  Carolynn Duncan blogged her way into the job she now has as the executive assistant to Phil Burns, COO of Provo Labs, one of Utah's cutting-edge technology companies.

Paul Allen, CEO of the company, blogged about her approach this way:

Carolynn Duncan used an ingenious approach to convince me and Phil that she was the right person for our latest position at Provo Labs. After finding out about the opening from her friend Adam (who works at our online video company 10Speed Media), she started a blog called “Why Provo Labs Wants to Hire Carolyn Duncan” at blogspot.

She instantly won us over with her creativity and courage. She will be helping Phil get in front of dozens of executives at large companies, including Fortune 500 companies, as he takes Provo Labs Consulting (our web 2.0 consultancy and development company) on the road, so we need a smart communicator with a creative streak who can help Phil open doors wherever he goes.

Welcome aboard, Carolynn!

Way to go!

It's amazing the amount of flip-flopping going on over the internet and its effect's on those in the workplace or joining the workplace. Just today my team discussed using MySpace.com to track down potential applicants to find something on them that could perhaps sway us from choosing them. Now I read this happy-ga-ga story about how the internet won someone a job. I'm still convinced the internet does more harm than good for someone and their career.

My comment here would be to remember that "The Internet" doesn't *do* anything other than collect & distribute information.

If you lived in a very small town and you said something rude to a certain infuential person in town (who had something against rude comments), you may have just as uneasy a time getting a job in that town.

But, the only way anybody would know about your rude comment was if they were told about it (or if someone published it in the town gossip newspaper)

The 'Internet' just helps us find out conversations about people we weren't around to hear.

I think the Internet just helps keep people a little more honest than they would otherwise wish to be.

My blog has definately helped me with my job search and in life. After people read it we start talking at a much higher more meaningful level. They know a bit about me.

Of course there is always more to the story than a blog tells...

My blog has made me a lot of friends, even those who may look like they're enemies.

Just like in chat there are conversations started on blogs that continue on a personal level. I admit at times I wish I weren't so transparent but overall the benefits are usually worth the risks.

I love it.
