As a recruiter, I should know better than to ask direct questions and not expect a direct answer.
Here is a dialogue I shared with my three-year old last night:
Daddy: Are you hiding anything?
Daughter: No.
Daddy: I can see that you're hiding something.
Daughter: No, I'm not.
Daddy: Come on now. Who do you think I am, a smart dad, or a not-smart dad?
Daughter: "Not-smart Dad".
At least I understand where her loyalties are.
With respect to recruiting, you must ask your candidates these tough questions too, and be ready for the answers. The worst part of this is when you don't want them to tell you the truth because you like them as a candidate.
Like the old saying goes: "Ask me no questions, I'll tell you no lies."
But in recruiting, you have to ask the questions.
