The greatest reason my clients use my services as a contingency recruiter is because they need somebody--now. It's gone from "nice" to "urgent" to "critical" and now "mission critical"
But the thing to be careful of is that can also be the greatest problem for a contingency recruiting firm--needing people now.
People use recruiters because we have access to people. It's intended to be built-in. They call us, we call a few of our people and badda-bing, badda-boom, the client gets the perfect person for the job.
So, the number-one thing to remember as a recruiter is to avoid the very problem your clients have. Develop relationships now so you'll know who to call on when your clients have an emergency.
You, the recruiter, are the bridge between these transactions. Your foundations must already be in place.
Take the time and energy to meet and get to know good, talented people. Take note of the people who live around you, in the companies that are near your office, etc. Share your business card and collect them from others. Be genuine and learn the skill of knowing people.
