Nobody's doubting that blogging is changing the way we all communicate. Shel Israel, co-author of Naked Conversations, blogged today about how Blogs are Changing Recruiting.
"I am becoming convinced that recruiting may be one of blogging's 'killer apps', Israel says. "A recruiting blog is superior from a Help Wanted ad in so many ways."
Since the day I started working at SOS Technical, I immediately felt an incredible vacancy in my ability to reach out and connect with people on a regular, convenient, yet intimate way.
My mom, a realtor, spends hundreds of dollars a month on gifts, trinkets, mailers and postcards to try and remind people of how personal and caring she is. It works for her, but not for me.
I started listening carefully to the feedback I was getting from my candidate pool. What were they looking for from me more than anything else?
The answer took no time at all: Better information about what jobs are being hired for right now along with a faster, easier way of being informed about them.
Second to that was their desire to get my advice on how to succeed in an interview, how to format their resumes, etc.
From there, the idea of the blog was born. Fast, easy, simple and real-time, the blog has enabled me to literally keep up with hundreds of the best candidates in my area without ever having to 'pitch' them or try and sell them on my service.
Beside that? The Google Juice from blogging is great. I tried for years to get on the first page of any search engine with my old websites with no luck. Now, when people want to find Tech Jobs in Utah, guess who's ranked right on top?
You guessed it.
P.S. For those of you who are worried, even though this blog is relatively new, I am still in the top-ten results for Recruiting Good People... ;)
Looking for a way to setup a blog quickly?
- Ask a geek in your company to help you setup a Wordpress blog at http://jobs.yourcompany.com (free!)
- Setup a blog at www.wordpress.com (also free, but not as much control. No hosting needed.)
- Setup a blog at Google's www.blogspot.com. No hosting needed, but you can even use FTP to send this content to your own server so you can use your own web domain name.
- Use Typepad.com to setup a blog without hosting required.
- If you need web-hosting, I like Pow-Web's hosting plans: $7.77/mo for 12GB site looks pretty good to me.
