I've been impressed with the new additions LinkedIn has released recently. One of them is the new dashboard when you login that tells you things going on in your network.
It has been interesting to me noting who of my connections are actively adding people to their networks. As I have been passively watching, the number of people who seem to be grooming their connections is going up.
To me, this is yet another sign that the marketplace is responding to the tighter job market. Many of the talented people that have been cocooning* over the last few years are actively out there, seeing who they know (and who knows the people they know) and pinging the waters to see what thenew boundaries are.
If you're not actively grooming your network, you should be. No matter if you are looking for your next move, or looking to hire a superstar, your network is growing around you. This is not the time to be eating alone!
* "holding tight" at a job you may not want, because the market isn't right for you to move.

I don't personally like "fisherman" who constantly test the waters to see if there's a bigger fish out there. Those candidates don't do well for my clients, hence don't do well for me. Corporate Philandering is not appreciated in my book.

Hiring is a tricky subject, one that requires many data points in order to make a worthwhile conclusion. And, surely, if you are at the C-level in your company, the candidates that make it to interview with you have been around the block a few times and may have picked up some habits along the way to try and smoke-screen you from a shady past.

One time I strongly recommend you (the candidate) bring up money/salary first is when you know you're asking for way more than the company wants to pay--in that circumstance, you'd better be up front about this at the VERY beginning of the cycle.

To me, the most-important element to create this is clear requirements--given in a constantly/publicly accessible format--at the beginning of the definite qualification period. These requirement must be based on a well-defined set of accomplishments that can not--in any way--be subjectively altered.
