Reading solemly like a shrine or a monument, Jeff Jordan, COO of Funding Universe, led me to a graffitti-like blog "Where seasoned entrepreneurs reflect on their first year in business and answer the questions: 'What would you have done? What wouldn't you have done?'"
It's all around an interesting read, but it's eerie how many of the "wished I hadn't" items listed revolve around--your guessed it--recruiting. To list a few:
"I wouldn't have hired family and friends..."
"I would have hired an accountant, or at the very least outsourced...
"I wouldn’t have approached hiring the way I did...."
"I ...wouldn’t have approached firing the way I did...."
"avoid hiring family..."
"I wouldn’t have skimped on money, under-paying, only to get some people who are learning on the job—ultimately, that is more expensive than a pro’s high salary."
"I would have hired an accountant and bookkeeper out the gate..."
"I wouldn't have hired some of the people I did..."
"I would have found a good accountant, lawyer and insurance person...."
"I wouldn't have hired my brother-in-law!""I would have hired slowed and fired faster."
You can feel their pain as you read their stories. Aside from this, the list warns would-be entrepreneurs to stress less, work less, and don't forget that your family is more important than your business ever could be.
In the end, "recruiting right" seems to stack right up there with the fastest way to build--or blow--your new venture. Heed the voice of warning: pay very close attention to who and how you recruit!
