The old B-School adage says: "Your greatest asset--and largest liability--walks out the door every night."
True it is that people make great companies great. In fact, great people make fairly lame companies great... but many companies simply lose out on harnessing their own employees' ability to help them attract and retain some of the best talent on the market.
How can you let your own superstars attract more superstars to your business? Let Them Blog!
First of all, let your employees keep a blog. Encourage it! Host it off your company's server if you want--or send them to blogger.com for a free account.
Next, let them be real about it (okay, lay down the law about "you will be fired for publishing stuff you shouldn't publish", and then let them be real about everything else)
Third, create a culture worth blogging about! (p.s. employees that hate their jobs don't make good bloggers for you)
The uber-geeks at Provo Labs, for example, all blog and talk, very openly, about their opinions, their philosophies, management-styles, technologies, tools they learn, things they don't want to forget, their jobs, their frustrations, their meetings, successes, themselves and eachother. They also give great business insight, their perceptions of the market, as well as public service announcements!
... oh, and something about the value of sugary cereal (what?)
The point is--you probably don't know anything about Provo Labs, but from just clicking these links, you probably have a good feeling for the type of people you'd be working with if you tried to get a job there.
