I hate to break it to you, but if you've had employees with you more than one year, they are probably out looking for another possible job right now. Especially if:
- They are educated, and they understand the basics of the economy.
- They have recently received their annual review and it was less-than-favorable (or, they didn't get one at all--ahem!)
- They are working on a technology, system, or process that is not widely understood or in your business--everybody just "needs" it. (This creates a feeling that the employee is serving everyone else, never being served. One-man IT departments are a prime example of this)
- One or more of their close friends just landed a sweet new gig. It's pretty tough to hold the "My company appreciates me" story very long when your best bud is waving a new iPOD or XBOX 360 in your face from the new raise she got.
What are you doing right now to keep their interest. Remember, people don't work for money--they work for satisfaction. Money is a part of that equation.
