Google is preparing to integrate job content from Google Base into its general Web search. This is serious for a few reasons:
- First, GoogleBase is free to post jobs to, a la Craig's List.
- Next, having this in Google search results is incredible. Not only google.com, but a9.com, yahoo.com, etc, etc, all use Google's search database.
- Also, did I mention it's free to post jobs?
What This Means...
Thanks to this reduction in the barrier-to-entry for job-posting , the market will be flooded with more job ads, especially as we power through this ultra-tight job market.
Search Engine Methodologies (Wikipedia: SEO) like Joel teaches will become crucial (I didn't say 'important') to be sure your jobs are popping up in natural search results.
But, at the end of the day, remember the economics at play here. Chant my mantra: it's the people, not the job ad, stupid.
When you're considering placing an ad for talent, remember that your goal is the right ad, in the right place... which sometimes looks like a Google Base post, a flier in a carwash, a letter in the mail, or the mouth of a recruiter.
Either way, get through the medium and to the end-result, and you'll be fine.
