Understanding Cultural Differences

Quick: Name the top-two companies in the world that make computer operating systems.

US Consumers (not geeks) will say Microsoft and Apple--not necessarilly in that order.

But just because they are arch rivals in the industry doesn't mean that Apple and Microsoft speak the same language, or approach their relationship to their customers in the same way.

Hence, it stands to reason that, just because a company is a competitor of yours, you shouldn't recruit from them without looking very closely at the company culture they are coming from.

For example, this very funny video from YouTube shows what would probably happen were the Microsoft packaging crew put in charge of redesigning the Apple iPod box.
